CHAPTER 14

Day drinking had terrible consequences. One being that Jessica could not accept Cole’s frosty attitude toward her at the office. Mildly buzzed and thoroughly annoyed, she took an Uber to his place, tailgated a young couple through the security doors in the foyer, and stalked up to his apartment on the third floor. This building seemed a little old. She’d expected him to live in a million-dollar condo, but she also knew he had multiple properties to his name.

When she rapped on the door, the sensation seemed to echo through her whole body, making her bones vibrate. Day drinking hazard.

Cole answered the door wearing a t-shirt and baggy shorts, a phone pressed to his ear. Jessica felt a surge of heat and wanted to lick his pecs. His eyes widened in shock, and he stared for a moment.

“Adam, I’ll call you back,” he said. Then after a pause. “Because she’s here.”

Hanging up the phone, his shock turned to anger, and he glowered at Jessica. “What are you doing here?”

“I need you to talk to me,” Jessica said, trying to sound angry, not needy.

“No, I mean how did you find this place? I don’t give out this address,” he said.

“You gave it to me when I booked the cat sitter.” She frowned, realizing she may have crossed a line, but she didn’t technically think this was stalking. After all, he’d been to her place, and he’d slept in her hotel bed. It was his turn to share.

“This is—”

“Can we talk? It doesn’t have to be here,” she offered, wanting to give him an out before he slammed the door in her face.

“I’m busy,” he growled, looking back into the apartment. “I—”

“I understand,” she said, her heart breaking as she turned to leave. It shouldn’t have mattered, but it did. As much as she wanted to separate her work from their passionate evening, the combined rejection on both fronts just blended them both into a pool of heartache.

“Wait. Let me get my shoes. Hold on,” he said, his hand brushing hers briefly. The door started to close, but then Rex darted out between his legs. Cole swore and Jessica dropped to her knees, pinning the cat with both hands before he could disappear down the stairs.

“Don’t try to pick him up. He’s a biter,” Cole warned. A moment later, he came around her with a pillowcase and scooped Rex inside it. The cat struggled at first, and Cole let the disgruntled cat’s face peek out but kept his body swaddled in the pillowcase.

“Now you’ve met Rex, the escape artist,” he laughed, shifting foot to foot, still struggling to keep hold of the cat. He hadn’t had time to get shoes on, and though the carpet looked clean, it probably wasn’t. “I haven’t had time to go through your notes yet.”

“I’m not asking about work,” she said. Then she corrected herself. “I’m not just asking about work. You said I was fine, but you don’t even know because you haven’t looked.”

“I know
